Sherry Street Joins ALEC as Vice President

ARLINGTON, VA, September 16, 2019 – Today, American Legislative Exchange Council announced the appointment of Sherry Street of the Illinois Policy Institute as Vice President of Policy Advancement. She joins the leadership team of the nation’s largest nonpartisan, voluntary membership organization of state legislators. Street joins ALEC at a time when the organization is poised for strong growth.

“Sherry’s 25-years of experience bringing together stakeholders to advance state public policy as well as her vast experience in the school choice and broader free market movement are a perfect fit for ALEC,” said ALEC CEO Lisa B. Nelson. “As ALEC members continue to address the most pressing state policy issues, Sherry’s leadership will guide staff to support legislative efforts in new and dynamic ways.”

Street will work with the ALEC team to build and grow a unified policy department and develop new tools and resources to help legislators protect and defend free enterprise and individual liberty in the states.

“ALEC is a policy leader on state issues from tax, pension and regulatory reform to government transparency and innovation,” said Sherry Street. “I’m enthusiastic about the opportunity to advance ALEC policy in partnership with their expert policy team and legislators across the states.”

Street previously served the Illinois Policy Institute as an external relations officer after having been involved in education reform for 20 years. In the policy arena she served as an education policy analyst for former Milwaukee Mayor John Norquist, where she helped expand Milwaukee’s school choice program to include religious schools. Sherry founded the South Carolina Association of Independent Schools Serving Minority Children. Through this network, she educated parents, religious leaders, decision makers and other community stakeholders about the state of education for at-risk children.

The American Legislative Exchange Council is a nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) organization focused free enterprise and individual liberty in the states. ALEC facilitates discussion between public and private sector leaders, think tanks and citizen groups and provides nonpartisan policy research, study and analysis.
