ALEC Applauds Repeal of ObamaCare and Provides a “Repeal Blueprint” for State Legislators

WASHINGTON, DC (Jan. 19, 2011) – The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) today commended the U.S. House of Representatives’ repeal of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare) and announced its release of The State Legislators Guide to Repealing ObamaCare. 

“ALEC applauds the leadership of Speaker Boehner and the U.S. House of Representatives in repealing ObamaCare and protecting the states from its harmful effects,” said Christie Herrera, ALEC’s Health and Human Services Task Force director and author of the book. 

“But now it’s time for state legislators to keep up the pressure—and ALEC’s State Legislators Guide to Repealing ObamaCare will serve as a repeal blueprint for anti-ObamaCare efforts at the state level,” Herrera added. 

Specifically, The State Legislators Guide to Repealing ObamaCare will help legislators learn about ObamaCare’s negative effects on Medicaid, taxes, mandates, and insurance regulation; discover state-level, defensive tactics that can be used to slow or stop ObamaCare’s most harmful provisions; and promote health care freedom through ALEC model legislation. 

ALEC has played a key role in galvanizing state pushback against ObamaCare. In 2010, legislators in 42 states have introduced or announced their intention to introduce ALEC’s Freedom of Choice in Health Care Act, model legislation mirrored on Arizona Proposition 101 and designed to block an individual mandate and protect patients’ rights. The model—named by Governing Magazine as one of the “Top 10 Issues to Watch in 2010”—was enacted in seven states via the legislature or the ballot box, and serves as the basis of Commonwealth v. Sebelius, Virginia’s first-in-the-nation lawsuit against the federal individual mandate. 

ALEC’s Health and Human Services Task Force has also been a national leader in promoting free-market, pro-patient health care reform at the state level. Since 2005, 38 states have enacted model healthcare legislation drafted by ALEC’s Health and Human Services Task Force.
