Event Purpose

45 years ago a small group of state legislators met in Chicago to implement a vision: A nonpartisan membership association for state lawmakers who shared a common belief in limited government, free markets and federalism. Their vision and initiative resulted in the creation of a voluntary membership association for people who believed that government closest to the people was fundamentally more effective. At that meeting state legislators, including then-Illinois State Rep. Henry Hyde and Iowa State Rep. Terry Brandstad, and Lou Barnett, a veteran of then-Gov. Ronald Reagan’s 1968 presidential campaign, launched the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). The creation of ALEC Task Forces was a result of President Ronald Reagan’s vision to restore the balance of power away from Washington, returning power to the states.

2018 is ALEC’s 45th anniversary year, a year in which to celebrate ALEC’s leadership with a history of offering real solutions to the top issues facing the states. ALEC’s effectiveness has demonstrated for decades that good ideas are better when shared! We will come together at a spectacular celebration at the ALEC 45th Anniversary Gala on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Tickets will go on sale in June 2018. Individual tickets will be $500.
