Workshop: Political Speech on the Internet: How the Push for “Transparency” Censors the People’s Voice

Description

The Internet and social media outreach are more important than ever to political speech, advertising and campaigns. It helps less well-known candidates connect with potential voters and incumbents better communicate with their constituents. Under many circumstances, legislators face a temptation to regulate online platforms by passing strict laws that regulate online speech. However, many of these bills result in depriving everyday Americans of their privacy and burden them with confusing regulations. In 2018, New York, Washington and Maryland passed bills regulating online speech. Join us to hear how these bills impact free speech, how they censor the people’s voice, and what you can do to ensure transparency for the government while protecting the privacy of We the People.
