Centrally planned cronyism won’t save R.I.

A March 20 “Political Scene” article highlighted the 38 Studios fiasco, in which Rhode Island officials chose to meddle in the marketplace to disastrous results. Despite this case study in the dangers of central planning, it seems state officials haven’t learned their lesson.

Recently, a partnership of think tanks and consultants, including the Brookings Institution, created “Rhode Island Innovates: A Competitive Strategy for the Ocean State.” Gov. Gina Raimondo and many state officials are poised to rely heavily on the report. While there is little doubt that Rhode Island is in need of an economic boost, Rhode Island Innovates is not the foundation for economic opportunity.
