ALEC-FreedomWorks Legislator of the Week

Speaker Linda Upmeyer is a native Iowan and was born in Mason City, Iowa. She received her BSN from the University of Iowa and her Master’s in Nursing from Drake University. She is currently serving her eighth term in the Iowa House.

In 2008 Speaker Upmeyer served as the Republican Whip and went on to serve as the House Majority Leader from 2010 until she was elected to the Speaker of The House in 2015. She is an active member of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) and serves as the Chair Emerita on the Board of Directors. She also serves as the Public Chair of the Center to Restore the Balance of Government. She has sponsored legislation that promotes sound right to work principles as well as healthcare reform across the state of Iowa.

In her personal life Speaker Upmeyer is a member of the Farm Bureau, the Iowa/American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society, Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society, Phi Theta Kappa and the Clear Lake Art Center.  She is a former trustee for the North Iowa Area Community College and a former board member of both the National and Iowa Association of Community College Trustees. She and her husband Doug live in Clear Lake and have five children: Chad, Matt, Blake, Tyler and Sara.
