American Legislative Exchange Council Focus:

Limited Government, Free Markets and Federalism

The American Legislative Exchange Council is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization focused solely on pro-growth, economic issues to increase opportunity for all Americans. The unique public-private partnership provided by the Council expands all members’ ability to understand and act upon issues that matter in states around the country.

The American Legislative Exchange Council provides a forum to facilitate the exchange of policy ideas from a variety of perspectives. Model policy and resolutions are developed by organization members and may not reflect the positions of any individual member, company, association, or non-profit.

On December 4, 2013, People for the American Way and the Center for Media and Democracy—both groups critical of ALEC free market principles—released a 28-year old document discussing homosexuality. The nearly three-decades-old document is not representative of American Legislative Exchange Council policy or perspectives. It was released to smear the organization and to pressure private sector partners who maintain strong diversity and inclusion commitments.

The American Legislative Exchange Council does not maintain model policy or take positions on social issues. Further, the American Legislative Exchange Council has never taken a position on gay marriage. Clear direction has been given from the Board of Directors and Private Enterprise Advisory Council to focus solely on the original mission of the organization: limited government, free markets and federalism. All adopted model policies and supported issue areas are published at www.alec.org.
