Free Market Coalition Signs Letter in Response to Senator Durbin

Statement Asserts Constitutional Right to Free Speech and Free Association

Arlington, Va., (Updated Friday, August 30, 2013)— The American Legislative Exchange Council released today a letter signed by a coalition of free market groups asserting their constitutional right to free speech and association. This statement follows an August 12 letter signed by nearly 300 state legislators addressed to Senator Durbin. The letters address the right of organizations to keep their membership lists private as indicated in the Supreme Court case NAACP v. Alabama.

The coalition letter follows a flood of editorials, opinion pieces and organizations’ statements expressing concern over Senator Durbin’s outreach to more than 300 companies and organizations inquiring about their participation with the American Legislative Exchange Council.

The coalition letter, sent today to all members of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Human Rights, can be accessed here.
