The Tax and Fiscal Policy Task Force develops policy to reduce excessive government spending and lower the overall tax burden. Its legislative members have been at the forefront of developing sound, free-market tax and fiscal policy. The Task Force has developed budget reform policies, tax and expenditure limitations, supermajority requirements for tax increases, dynamic revenue forecasting, and legislation opposing Internet taxes. The Task Force has three subcommittees that explore various issues in detail, including the Internet Subcommittee, the Tax Reform Subcommittee, and the Tax and Expenditure Limitation (TEL) subcommittee.

A recent survey of members indicated that tax policy was their top concern. In the most recent legislative session, over 500 bills to lower the tax burden and curb excessive government spending were introduced by ALEC members.

Jonathan Williams of ALEC: Rich States, Poor States

The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) recently released the third edition of Rich States, Poor States, which provides the 2010 ALEC-Laffer State Economic Competitiveness rankings of states based on their economic policies. The third edition examines why the economic crisis has been so rough on the states, what states should do to alleviate the fiscal pain, and what they should avoid. In this week's podcast, Tax Foundation Staff Economist Kail Padgitt, Ph.D., interviews Jonathan Williams, Director of ALEC's Tax and Fiscal Policy Task Force and co-author of the report, discusses the latest rankings.
