Under the leadership of Public Sector Chair Representative Jerry Madden, TX, the Public Safety and Elections Task Force is dedicated to developing model policies that reduce crime and violence in our cities and neighborhoods; while also focusing on developing policies to ensure integrity and efficiency in our elections, and within our systems of government.
The priorities of the Task Force are to consider policies that improve public safety, hold offenders accountable, and control corrections spending for states. Similar to the Texas reforms passed in 2007 that diverted prison construction dollars to treatment programs and evidence-based reforms, ALEC has joined the growing movement across the nation to take a serious look at criminal justice programs and the solutions that protect communities and save taxpayer dollars. ALEC’s Public Safety and Elections Task Force is committed to providing solutions that reduces recidivism by strengthening community supervision, that improves government efficiency through data collection and performance measurement, and that contains corrections costs by concentrating prison space on violent and career criminals.
The Task Force also addresses issues including, but not be limited to: public financing of political campaigns, the Electoral College, legislative transparency, and the over-proliferation of criminal law.
